John Murray has been a pro since 2003 and is the brother of British Olympian Joe Murray. The British boxer is trained by Joe Gallagher in Manchester.

Within two years of going pro Murray won the WBC Youth Lightweight Championship. He was awarded the Young Boxer of the Year award, which had previously been given to the likes of Ricky Hatton and Frank Bruno.

In November 2007 he won the English Lightweight Championship after he stopped Dean Hickman in the fourth round. Six months later, Murray graduated to British belt.

In September 2010, Murray beat Andriy Kudryavtsev in nine rounds, making his seventh early finish in a row.

2011 was a troublesome year for the Mancunian, however, as he suffered back-to-back knockout defeats in championship fights. Murray was first beaten by Kevin Mitchell for the vacant IBO Intercontinental Lightweight Championship in July before Brandon Rios prevented his WBA World Lightweight Championship challenge in December.
