Unbeaten Australian Jeff Horn defends his WBO World Welterweight Title against England’s Gary Corcoran on December 13th in Brisbane.
Back in July, Horn pulled off one of the upsets of the year to claim World honours, outpointing Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao in an extremely tough encounter in front of his home fans at the Suncorp Stadium.
Horn imposed his superior size on the older man early on, before the former eight-weight World Champion stormed back to almost stop the Aussie in the ninth round. ‘The Hornet’ weathered the storm though and rallied back in the later rounds to win a unanimous decision, a verdict that has courted some controversy among the boxing fraternity.
The 29-year-old, who has also obtained notable stoppage wins over former World Champion Randall Bailey and World Title challenger Ali Funeka in 2016, enters December’s contest with a record of 17 wins, no losses and one draw, with 11 of those triumphs coming inside the distance.
In Gary Corcoran (17-1, 7 KOs) Horn will find a rugged, tough competitor that pushes forward with relentless intensity who attempts to overwhelm and dominate his opponents with his high-pressure style.
Although the underdog, the Londoner will take confidence from his habit of spoiling undefeated records. Most recently he won a split decision in a back-and-forth battle in July over then-undefeated Larry Ekundayo to set up a clash with the WBO titlist. In 2015, ‘Hellraiser’ defeated Rick Skelton and Rick Godding, also taking their unbeaten records in the process and Corcoran will be looking to do the same to his Australian opponent.
Australian hero Jeff Horn wants to impress the Brisbane faithful again after his heroic performance in the summer. With the Champion likely looking to the bigger fights on the horizon next year, Corcoran will be out to cause the upset and claim his first World Title.
