Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi strips Senchenko of his WBA World Welterweight Championship with a ninth-round TKO win. Referee Steve Smoger was left with no choice but to wave the contest off after the then undefeated Ukrainian suffered severe swelling to his left eye.
The win was a thoroughly deserved one for the popular Brooklyn-born Italian-American. He executed his fight plan perfectly, remaining elusive from the first bell to last and working in behind a solid jab. Senchenko's face began to mark up as early as the fourth round, while it soon became apparent that referee Smoger was considering calling an early end to proceedings.
And, with 70 seconds on the clock in the ninth round, Smoger, known to be a lenient official, stepped between the two fighters to declare Malignaggi as the new WBA World Welterweight Champion.
