The WBC World Super-Featherweight Title

Post-fight analysis

Miguel Berchelt became the new WBC World Super-Featherweight Champion after stopping Mexican rival Francisco Vargas in the 11th round in California.

With his vision badly affected, Vargas was bloodied and bruised by the time the referee Raul Caiz intervened to stop the fight two minutes in the penultimate session.

The entertaining scrap begun with Berchelt, the younger man, taking control early on, unloading a number of combinations and straight jabs on Vargas.

After four rounds it was clear that Berchelt, fighting outside of his home country for just the second time, was not intimidated by the unbeaten World Champion and was the clear aggressor.

Vargas suffered a cut above both eyes heading into the middle stages, one from a punch and one from an accidental clash of heads. He was checked by the doctor in both the ninth and 10th rounds.

Berchelt maintained his intensity and by the 11th round, the pressure was too much as Vargas’ swollen left eye caused the referee to call a halt.

Pre-fight preview

BoxNation will begin the New Year with an all-Mexican World Title fight, as Francisco Vargas defends his WBC World Super-Featherweight belt against Miguel Berchelt.

This exciting match-up takes place on January 28th at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, and looks to set to be an action-packed contest.

Last time out in June, Vargas’ first defence resulted in a majority draw with former Featherweight Champion Orlando Salido, in a candidate for fight of the year.

The 31-year-old (23-0-2,17 KOs) now faces dangerous countryman Miguel Berchelt, who is six years his junior and boasts an impressive knockout ratio.

Berchelt (30-1, 27 KOs) was last on our screens in March 2016, when he stopped George Jupp in the sixth round to win the Interim WBO World Super Featherweight Title.

Both warriors have an entertaining style so viewers could be in store for a cracker to start 2017 in style. On the undercard, Takashi Miura (30-3-2, 23 KOs) faces Miguel Roman (56-11, 43 KOs).
