Our cameras are in the Philippines on Saturday 24th August to bring you live coverage of exciting John Riel Casimero’s interim WBO World Bantamweight Title defence against Cesar Ramirez, on a show staged by Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions.
WBO full Champion Zolani Tete must fight the winner inside 90 days, so it’s a must-win fight for Filipino Casimero (27-4, 18 KOs) and Mexican Cesar Ramirez (18-3, 11 KOs).
Both Casimero and Ramirez are familiar names who British fight fans know well.
Two-weight World Champion Casimero travelled to London in September 2016 and stopped Charlie Edwards in his first defence of the IBF Flyweight crown he’d taken from Amnat Ruenroeng four months earlier.
Ramirez, 31, was beaten on points by Belfast’s Ryan Burnett in July 2016, but has won six on the spin with five of those wins coming by knockout.
He last boxed in April when he was taken the 12 round distance by Eddy Valencia outpointing his rival to claim a WBC fringe belt. But he will be the underdog when he goes into enemy territory in San Juan City, Manila.
After getting revenge with a fourth round KO of Ruenroeng, who had previously outpointed him, his only defence was against Edwards before relinquishing and leaping two weights.
That switch paid off in April when he made his American debut and knocked out Ricardo Espinoza Franco in the 12th round to claim the interim crown and within touching distance of Tete.
Going into the final round it was level pegging with one judge scoring it level, one having Casimero ahead and other siding with Mexican Franco, but John pulled it out when it mattered.
Casimero, 30, has been a professional for more than 12 years and in 2012 became IBF Light-Flyweight Title holder and made three defences before losing it on the scales.
