South African ace Kevin Lerena returns to BoxNation on Saturday 8th June when he defends his IBO Cruiserweight crown against Czech fighter Vasil Ducar.
He hopes to show he is the man to replace Oleksandr Usyk - who has made a switch to Heavyweight - as the new ‘King Cruiser’ when he faces heavy handed Ducar (7-0-1, 6 KOs) on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
Lerena (22-1, 10 KOs) wowed BoxNation viewers in March when he destroyed unbeaten German star Artur Mann inside four rounds.
Southpaw Lerena is arguably the biggest star in South African boxing, after Zolani Tete, and a rising force in the 200lb division.
Lerena, 27, won his title in September 2017 outpointing Congolese powerhouse Youri Kalenga. He made a successful first defence against Ukrainian Dmytro Kucher, who had knocked out Enzo Maccarinelli inside a round.
Again he had to go the full 12 rounds and made it a Ukrainian double last June when he travelled to Baku and outpointed Roman Golovashchenko.
But the win against Mann really showed potential and his fans will expect another big-hitting win against Ducar.
Lerena’s only blemish was a points loss against Johnny Muller in November 2014 that he avenged with a 10th round knockout 18 months later.
Ducar, 29, is capable of tearing up the script as he proved against French puncher Samuel Kadje last September when he travelled to Lille.
Kadje was undefeated and had knocked out 10 of his 12 victims, but Ducar showed no fear. He was trailing on points, but with just eight-seconds of the 10 rounder remaining he sensationally stopped exhausted Kadje to set up a huge opportunity.
It was an exciting fight and Ducar is promising to cause another shock when he travels to South Africa.
