It was a brave effort by George Jupp, who had just one week's notice to travel to Mexico and take on Miguel Berchelt.
Berchelt, who was deep in training to fight Roman Martinez was the fresher man and stopped the valiant challenger in round 6.
Jupp had nothing to lose and put in a more than impressive display given the circumstances, giving the Mexican some problems of his own.
A succession of uppercuts landed on Berchelt when he was coming forward with his own attacks but the home town hero took Jupp's punches well.
The pressure eventually told and Jupp was dropped for the third and final time in round 6 with a meaty uppercut that drained the fight from the Londoner.
The 25 year old can certainly hold his head high and will have learnt from the experience of fighting away from home in a hostile atmosphere.
George Jupp lands a dream, short notice shot at the WBO Interim Super-Featherweight World Title against Miguel Berchelt in Mexico, this Saturday night live on BoxNation.
After upsetting Mitchell Smith back in December to pick up the WBO Intercontinental Title, Jupp catapulted himself into the WBO World Rankings.
After Miguel Berchelt’s fight against full World Champion Roman Martinez fell through due to injury, Jupp has stepped in at just seven days’ notice to fight the Mexican banger.
Berchelt is the mandatory challenger but the fight is now effectively a final eliminator to secure a fight with Martinez.
The reigning Champion has suffered with severe tendonitis in his left hand and has been advised to rest for four weeks before resuming training.
24 year old Berchelt has racked up 28 wins with 24 coming inside the distance and holds just the one loss, on an otherwise perfect record.
Jupp will have the height advantage and will need to make the most of this should be pull of another upset.
Despite going into a hostile environment at short notice, the victory over Smith will breed confidence. The Londoner showed he has a solid jab mixed with intelligence and will travel knowing he has nothing to lose.
We’ll have more information about the broadcast of this fight as soon as possible.
