Heavy-handed Mexican warrior Miguel Berchelt makes the second defence of his WBC World Super-Featherweight Title against Maxwell Awuku on February 10th, live on BoxNation.
This will be Berchelt’s first fight in his hometown of Cancun since July 2011, so he will be eager to put on a show in front of his supporters at the Plaza de Toros.
Just over a year ago in January 2017, Berchelt was crowned World Champion after a gruelling stoppage victory over Francisco Vargas. Berchelt came in as the underdog but put in a mature display to grind down his countryman in a bloody battle which concluded in the 11th round.
Next up was a tough defence against former titlist Takashi Miura. ‘The Scorpion’ showed a different side to his game and out-boxed his Japanese foe with ease to retain his belt in California.
Awuku (44-3-1, 30 KOs) was a late replacement for this fight, as Berchelt was originally due to face Cristian Mijares. The southpaw has won four in a row since he was outpointed by Daud Yordan for the WBO African Lightweight belt in 2011.
This will be only the third time Awuku has fought outside of Africa, after bouts against Yordan in Indonesia and his visit to London in 2010 to take on Liam Walsh for the Commonwealth Title.
With Vasyl Lomachenko planning a move up to Lightweight, Berchelt will be hoping to establish himself as the new king at 130 pounds this year, starting with an impressive performance in Mexico.
