Fight week has kicked off in Las Vegas and our man on the famous Strip Steve Lillis caught up with World Title challenger Amir Khan on Monday night.
Settled into his pre-fight surroundings, Khan was in good spirits as he openly discussed Saturday night’s super-fight against Canelo Alvarez, hopes for the future and more.
“I used to watch my heroes and all the other big names in boxing who had their picture draped down the side of the MGM and now it’s my time – it’s a huge fight!” revealed the excited Brit.
When quizzed by Steve Lillis if this was his biggest fight to date, Khan replied: “This has to be my biggest fight, Canelo is a huge name in America. It has to be one of the biggest fights of the year, a puncher v a boxer - You have the whole world tuning into this fight!”
Khan is relishing being the outsider in this clash of the titans will be using that tag to inspire him to victory come fight night.
“I’m the B side going into this fight, he’s the Champion and it’s Cinco de Mayo. It’s a little different, but being the underdog will bring the best out in me.”
The flame-haired Mexican has tasted defeat just once in a 48 fight, 11 year career.
“It’s happened in the past where big upsets have happened, beating Canelo would be one of the biggest upsets ever! I really believe I can do it.”
Canelo’s sole defeat was to the self-proclaimed ‘TBE’ Floyd Mayweather, Khan believes victory at the newly opened T-Mobile Arena would be enough to lure the 49-0 star out of retirement for a huge showdown.
“I think the Mayweather fight has to happen if I beat Canelo. Styles make fights and I really believe a fight with Floyd would be easier than Canelo. I would love to have that, I have a massive fight but a win here would take me to that next level.”
