Welsh star Joe Calzaghe has said one-time foe Roy Jones Junior should have retired many years ago.
Calzaghe, who hung up his gloves after going 46-0 with a career-defining unanimous decision win in New York over Jones Jr, spoke about the American’s plans to continue fighting at the age of 46. Jones Jr faces another Welshman, Enzo Maccarinelli, in Russia on December 12th, exclusively live in the UK on BoxNation, in a fight which is big on intrigue.
“Before the Roy Jones fight, I knew I was going to retire because I couldn’t train, my hands had gone and the hunger had gone”, said Calzaghe, speaking to Boxingscene.com’s Edward Chayovsky.
“If you know you’re just fighting for the money and you’re not fighting for the championship, you’re going to lose, so I thought ‘it’s time for me to quit’.”
“Roy Jones Jr should have retired a while back. He was one of the best fighters pound-for-pound. It’s not nice to see fighters still fighting when they shouldn’t be.”
