On September 16th, Billy Joe Saunders defends his WBO World Middleweight belt against former World Title challenger Willie Monroe Jr. For this bout Saunders has changed up his camp, moving to Sheffield and working with renowned trainer Dominic Ingle.

Ingle has a consistent stable of world class fighters but was more than happy to add the WBO kingpin. The Sheffield trainer spoke to iFL TV about taking him on.

“When Frank Warren phoned me up weeks ago, he said ‘I’ve got a fighter for you to train’ when he told me it was Billy Joe Saunders I said that’s one fighter I’d love to train.

“There’s only a few things that need tweaking with him; his diet, his conditioning. He can fight, that’s not the issue, a few things need tightening up. What a dream guy to train!”

According to Ingle, Sheffield has seemly ironed out any previous issues: “Most people would look at him and think ‘nightmare, not conditioned, eats rubbish and probably doesn’t do what he’s told.’ But he comes in, you tell him, he does it, [asks] anything else? No? Right, done.”

The famous cornerman also spoke about Saunders’ claims that he would make his next opponent quit on September 16th. “[Monroe quitting] might be in [Saunders’] head but the only bad fight I’ve seen Monroe in is Golovkin, and he makes everybody look bad. He doesn’t give you time to do everything. I think he disheartened him.

“Billy Joe Saunders is not Golovkin, he’s a different type of fighter but Sugar Ray Leonard made Duran quit. He tormented the life out of Duran. [Saunders] is a good fighter, technical, skillful. He can fight forward, backward,” added Ingle.
