Promoter Frank Warren has backed his man Liam Smith to return with a bang.
Following a thunderous body shot in the ninth round, Smith suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Canelo Alvarez on Saturday night.
Speaking post-fight at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas with iFL TV, Warren revealed: “He was in with an elite fighter, it was a big step up in class but getting beat is not the end of the world. It was a competitive fight whilst it lasted. We’ll bring him back. He’ll come back early next year and into the swing of things.”
Warren praised the Scousers’ temperament on the big stage after walking out in front of over 50,000 partisan fans: “He wasn’t fazed by it. It tells you the type of guy he is.”
Smith was left bloody after a barrage of Alvarez punches opened up an existing cut but Warren has no regrets.
“It was a problem with the cut he received over six weeks ago. He had stitches in it and at that stage it was if we were to pull him out of the fight. You can’t spar when you are cut, it was a gamble and it didn’t pay off that he’s lost his title but the other side is TV and the press were impressed with his courage and style.”
