Experienced trainer Abel Sanchez is confident his charge Gennady Golovkin will step up to the challenge of his biggest test to date.
On September 16th, the Middleweight king defends his belts against Mexican star Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in the bright lights of Las Vegas.
Golovkin's team have wanted this fight for a long time, and Sanchez hopes to make a statement. “Gennady needs to beat Canelo. He needs to destroy Canelo, destroy the aura that he has right now,” he told Golden Boy's Beto Duran.
In recent years Alvarez has dispatched the likes of Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan and Liam Smith and appears to be at his peak coming into this colossal clash. He has also fought in Las Vegas multiple times.
After headlining in cities such as New York, London and Monaco, Golovkin is now top billing in the fight capital of the world. Sanchez says the winner will be recognised as the best in the world.
“All the big fights are in Vegas. Gennady has never had a fight of this magnitude. This is a fight for world supremacy,” he argued. “The Middleweight division has always been the glory division so the winner of this fight will be considered a superstar!”
Six or seven years ago, Golovkin actually sparred Canelo in Big Bear, California, and Sanchez remembers predicting that the Mexican would go on to be successful. There were also rumours that the Kazakh hurt Canelo several times.
“Canelo was just a young boy of 19 or 20 years when he and Gennady sparred. He’s progressed immensely since then. My impression of Canelo after that sparring session was that he was fast and smart, had nice combinations and good movement, but he was only five years into his professional career at that time. I thought he could be a Champion or a star someday,” he recalled.
