Former cruiserweight and heavyweight world titlist Evander Holyfield has declared that Gennady Golovkin is the world’s pound for pound best fighter.

Golovkin was this week installed as the WBC’s mandatory challenger to face the winner of Cotto v Canelo on November 21, and fighting legend Holyfield said he believed the Kazakh KO king was the only middleweight who wasn’t afraid of facing anyone else in the division.

“In boxing, nobody should be afraid of nobody else, and the best should fight the best. So I think GGG is the best pound for pound fighter in the world right now,” Holyfield said, speaking to’s Manuel Rivera.

“He fights with anyone, he beats everybody, and he’s the only middleweight who does not avoid anyone. Whoever you ask, he tell you ‘okay, let’s do it.”

Many commentators have 44-0 Nicaraguan Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez at the top of their pound for pound top 10 lists following the retirement of the former king Floyd Mayweather in September, but Holyfield was clear in his choice. Gonzalez currently tops the P4P rankings for The Ring Magazine.

There’s no doubt that a win for Golovkin over the victor of Cotto v Canelo would certainly push him further up in most writers’ estimations.
