After becoming Southern Area Light-Heavyweight Champion last month, Anthony Yarde is keen to keep his feet on the ground and progress through the division at his own pace.
On July 8th, ‘The Beast’ fights Richard Baranyi for the WBO European belt, where a win would secure a top 15 ranking with the governing body for the next step of his exciting journey.
“For me, the best boxer now that’s active, barring Floyd [Mayweather], is Andre Ward,” he told Behind The Gloves. “Eventually I want to get to that level, so I’m just working hard. Everything for me is motivation.”
The likes of Ward, Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson top the stacked division. When asked which boxer he would like to face at 175lbs, Yarde remained tight-lipped, stating that he is no rush to start calling out opponents.
“Everything is timing, and time don’t wait for nobody. I could be at the stage in one year or two years. Ward could have retired, a new Champion might have come on the horizon, or another young fighter…that could be the best clash at that time.”
“I don’t put energy into any other fighter. I’m just focused on myself, being the best Anthony Yarde and making my own name. The ‘Mecca of Boxing’ is Las Vegas. It would be a dream to actually fight there one day.”
