Ahead of his huge World Title shot against IBF Super-Featherweight Champion Gervonta Davis on May 20th, Liam Walsh has revealed the American’s frightening power does not worry him.
Both men put their unbeaten records on the line at the Copper Box Arena in London, live on BoxNation and BT Sport.
Mandatory challenger Walsh was in line to face Jose Pedraza until Davis hammered the Puerto Rican in seven rounds in January, becoming the youngest World Champion in boxing.
Speaking exclusively to BoxNation after Tuesday’s press conference, Walsh admitted: “I was always open to Pedraza losing the fight. Davis winning hasn’t thrown me at all.
“I’m really excited because I know it’s a cracking fight! Davis is a much bigger fight. There’s more reward for beating him than Pedraza. It’s gone perfect, I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better!”
Davis, who fights under the Mayweather Promotions banner, is regarded as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport after stopping 16 of his 17 opponents before the final bell. However Walsh believes he can handle the heavy-hitting ‘Tank’.
“I’m not scared of his power whatsoever,” declared the Cromer talent. “You won’t see me running around! I know I can punch at 9 stone 4 - you’ll see that on the night. He’s a sharp puncher, but I’m not afraid of his power, no.
“When the odds go out I’ll be a huge underdog I think, but that makes training easier for me. It makes everything easier for me. It’s a perfect situation. I’m not going to say I haven’t got anything to lose because I have...I’ve got my teeth!”
