This weekend the fight of the decade takes place between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin in Las Vegas, live on BoxNation Box Office.
For Golovkin it will be the big fight he’s been clamouring for and the chance to cement his claim as one of the best boxers pound-for-pound. For his Mexican rival, he will want to prove he was never avoiding ‘GGG’ and has always been the better man.
Speaking to BoxNation, Canelo answered the critics who have accused him of avoiding the Kazakh fighter. Asked if he was bothered by the accusations of ‘ducking’, Canelo responded: “Not at all, I’ve had that before with other fighters and I end up beating them. On September 16th, I’m going to do what I do best.
“I’m a complete fighter now, I give the fans everything. I love working hard and coming forward.” Alvarez added.
The two-weight World Champion is also unimpressed with the row of fighters ‘GGG’ has knocked out to form his 89% knockout ratio. “I would’ve knocked out the same fighter’s Golovkin has easily,” he said speaking through his translator. “I would’ve done the same thing very easily. Easier!”
When asked for his assessment of what many are calling his biggest challenge in a career than already contains names such as Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather, Alvarez played down Golovkin’s power.
“He’s a very good fighter, he does things well in the ring. It’s not that he’s a big knockout fighter. He’s got power yes, but only if you’re there to take the power. He’s never fought with a guy who can get away from the big punches and counter-punch him.
“He’s in a fight with someone different this time. We’ll see what happens September 16th, we’ll see who knocks out who!”
