WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders has revealed some details about his next opponent, with a full announcement about who he will be fighting expected soon.
Speaking after Monday’s BoxNation and BT Sport launch press conference, he told iFL TV: “I’m not going to say no to a mega-fight that’ll hopefully be signed for a hell of a lot of money in the upcoming week, at Middleweight.”
The Hatfield fighter remained tight-lipped but did drop a few hints when quizzed about who he could be facing, revealing that his next contest will be staged abroad.
“There’s a couple of different things we have to get in. You will genuinely know who it is, it’s the best of the best. I can’t say too much because everything has been done, like money,” continued Saunders.
“All the things that mess fights about have been done. All it is now is a small thing, and I will have to travel. This fight should get staged in America but it won’t, I’ve got to go to his home country I think.”
Having made one defence of his belt since becoming World Champion, the unbeaten southpaw has talked up a unification bout with Gennady Golovkin. For now, fans are left to keep guessing who Billy Joe will face in his next outing.
Saunders also discussed his split with long-term trainer Jimmy Tibbs. “There was no problem. I just needed a change. I was unbeaten with him - I love Jimmy. I was feeling myself go a bit stale,” he said to Behind the Gloves. The 27-year-old has now teamed up with Adam Booth.
