On November 18th undefeated Super-Flyweight Jamie Conlan challenges Jerwin Ancajas for his IBF World Title in one of the biggest cards Belfast has ever seen.
Speaking to Irish News, Conlan and brother Michael spoke about how monumental victory would be for the city.
Michael Conlan: “When he beats [Ancajas] he’ll be in the top three [Irish fighters of all time], easy… Ancajas is class, one of the best in the division the other champions don’t want to fight him.”
Jamie Conlan: “I’m fighting one of the best in the world at the peak of their career. My downfall has been dropping to the opponent’s level, this guy is world level and I will rise to that.
“[Ancajas] didn’t want to come here,” continued ‘The Mexican’. “He didn’t want to fight someone hungry and fighting in their backyard.”
When quizzed on the game plan, the brothers emphatically answered in favour of using the Irishman’s boxing IQ.
Jamie Conlan: “Box. It’s going to be a chess match and dogfight at times and I’ve done both game plans. This camp feels different. Everything’s pushed me to the limit but I feel happy, I’m in a great place mentally. I know that I’m going to be World Champion.”
Michael Conlan: “[He’s got to] box. When someone comes with a warrior style he starts a warrior style, he’s comfortable doing it. But that is not his style, he is a boxer. He has to keep boxing, he can’t go to war, he’s going to out-box this guy.
“He’s going to put on the best performance of his career. Ancajas is made for him,” added the fast-rising prospect.
