With the WBO Interim World Super-Welterweight Title now at stake for Saturday’s much-anticipated showdown between Liam Smith and Liam Williams, the winner could be bang in line to fight Miguel Cotto.
Canelo Alvarez seems highly likely to vacate, so not only will the winner be upgraded to full Champion, a mandatory defence against the highest ranked competitor, currently Cotto could well be in the offering.
Unbeaten Williams admits it would be a dream fight: “I’ve always loved watching Cotto, I’ve looked up to him. I’ve got a tattoo of him on my back, but that wouldn’t stop me from wanting to share the ring with him and give him a good beating!”
Before these potentially lucrative and huge fights, Williams has to overcome Smith who is firmly on his mind: “These big fights, I’ve got to keep focused and not get side tracked by these things. The Title being added and the talk of Canelo or Cotto for the winner is unreal to be honest.
“It’s very exciting but I can’t get carried away and have to focus on the task ahead. First of all I have to beat Liam Smith on Saturday night. I’m 100% bringing that belt back to Wales!”
Fans and pundits alike have acknowledged the showdown has all the makings of a potential Fight of the Year contender with Williams counting down to the opening bell.
It is without question the biggest fight in Williams’ soon to be 18 fight career. In the build-up, Williams and trainer Gary Lockett jetted Stateside to gain some invaluable experience sparring around some of the most notorious gyms on the West Coast.
“We went to a lot of gyms like TopRank and Mayweather’s, it was a great experience. The atmosphere was intimidating for a lot of people, but I’m not that type to get over roared.
“With all the ringside shouting and different nationalities. Mainly it was to get away from home for two weeks, we had a great time and a lot of fun. It can only benefit me and keep me fresh,” explained the reigning British Champion.
