It couldn’t happen… Could it?
Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor sounds like something from a computer game but the talk has ramped up over the last week to make those ‘in the know’ acknowledge there is some truth in the farfetched fight which brings together boxing and MMA.
As we know, both are driven by money and the 49-0 star is keeping his cards close to his chest: "It's possible, it may not be a rumour," toyed Floyd with the media over the weekend.
Legendary trainer Freddie Roach confirmed he has been approached to potentially train McGregor.
Roach explained to Radio Rahim: "No [discussion of Mayweather] but just to train him. I said 'sure, bring him down' - I'd like to see and meet the guy, see what he has."
Amir Khan added more fuel to the fire last night with the following Tweet:
In addition, the man himself ‘Notorious’ posted a mock up fight poster across his social media accounts which had both men going face to face.
Speculation on the Strip last week during Khan v Canelo fight week was that Floyd is itching to put the gloves back on. Danny Garcia’s name was thrown about but the self-proclaimed ‘TBE’ has since shot down the idea.
Is it time to acknowledge the fight is a potential goer? As mad as it sounds, time will tell. You never know with Floyd.
There’s plenty of hurdles to overcome for this to become a reality and is more likely that both are using each other to build some publicity around their own separate returns for later in the year, but as ever with Mayweather he likes to keep people second guessing.
