Michael Conlan is preparing for his fifth pro bout this weekend on the undercard of one of boxing’s best fights in Vasyl Lomachenko v Guillermo Rigondeaux. However, the Irishman isn’t star struck, he is viewing this weekend's bout as a scouting mission.

Speaking at his media workout and press conference the prospect argued he deserves to be on a such a huge card.

“I deserve this opportunity, 100 percent, it’s the same arena I sold out on my debut. I’m here on the same card as two of the greatest pound-for-pound amateurs ever. I know I have to impress when I’m on such a big stage…I’ll win and I’ll win in style on Saturday!”

The amateur standout will also be analysing the headline fighters on Saturday because he expects to face them in the future: “I think both Rigo and Lomachenko are unbelievable fighters. But one day soon I expect to be fighting one of them, so I wouldn’t feel star struck.

“I always have the end goal in mind, which is that one of them could be a future opponent. I’m just watching and learning because I know they’re ahead of me, but it’s not going to be too long before I get to that stage,” added 4-0 Conlan

Promoter Bob Arum is expecting big things from the Olympian: “We’re big fans of Mick. He’s been coming along terrifically, he’s going to be a co-feature at Madison Square Garden this weekend. He’s only going to get better and he’s a future star of boxing. I expect a big performance!”
