Golden Boy Boxing owner Oscar De La Hoya today told the media he believes Liam Smith will not lay down when he faces Mexican star Canelo Alvarez.
Speaking at a London press conference to announce Canelo v Liam Smith live on BoxNation on September 17th, the former six-weight World Champion said he can't wait to see this huge WBO World Super-Welterweight Title showdown.
"Both fighters will go in fighting for their countries.
"Not only does [Canelo] fill arenas of 40,000, he’s doing it because he’s fighting with a World Champion who’s dangerous. [Liam Smith is] travelling to the US to bring back his title. He’s not going to the US to fold. He’s a fighter that’s much bigger than Canelo. He’s taking this serious," said the Golden Boy.
“We know how important this fight is. How dangerous this fight is."
Speaking about the fight, which will be held in the 100,000 capacity AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, on Mexican Independence Day weekend, De La Hoya said he's expecting a sell out crowd and a massive occasion.
"This fight is being staged around Mexican Independence weekend. It’s a huge deal for all Mexican-Americans. This fight here, the fact it’s surrounded by the whole Independence weekend, I can assure you that millions and millions of fans will be able to witness a historical event with Canelo Alavrez and Liam Smith.
"Canelo has been looking sensational in every fight. At the tender of just 26, Canelo Alvarez is getting more experience and climbing the ladder with thanks to [Eddy Reynoso]."
