Legendary trainer Freddie Roach believes victory for Amir Khan against Saul Alvarez in May could put his former fighter back to the top of the world scene.

“If he wins this one, it’ll put him on the map worldwide,” revealed Roach.

Despite the shock announcement made yesterday, Roach feels Khan perhaps should have gone another route.

“I think he would have been better off taking the Kell Brook fight, he is a good fighter but he’s not as good as the opponent he’s picked!”

When quizzed if Khan can avoid Canelo’s thunderous punches during the fight, Roach explained to FightHub: “It’ll be difficult for 36 minutes, Khan has a tendency to stay in the pocket too long sometimes.”

Roach trained Khan for just shy of four years before both parties went their separate ways in September 2012.
