Roman Gonzalez insists he will not under-estimate McWilliams Arroyo in their battle of the little big men next month.
‘Chocolatito’ will be defending his WBC Flyweight crown and bidding to show why so many consider him the pound-for-pound number one in their Los Angeles clash on April 23, which is live on BoxNation.
Gonzalez was one of boxing’s biggest secrets but exposure on HBO has made him one of the sport’s biggest attractions.
The Nicaraguan wrecker has won all 44 fights and is a big favourite to beat the Puerto Rican who dropped a split decision against Amnat Ruenroeng in a IBF title fight in September 2014.
Gonzalez said: “This is a big opportunity for Arroyo.
“He feels like he should already be champion from his close, split decision loss to Amnat Ruenroeng.
“I know how strong and well prepared he will be for this fight. This is a big test and very important fight for me.”
Gonzalez, 28, is looking to clean up the 112lb division and a rematch with WBA Super and WBO champion Juan Francisco Estrada has been mooted.
Estrada was the last boxer to take Gonzalez the distance back in 2012. Roman has won all ten fights since then by KO.
Speaking from his Costa Rica training base, ‘Chocolatito’ added: “I get asked a great deal about the rematch with Estrada but for now I have a very tough fight in front of me against McWilliams Arroyo on April 23 and I’m fully focused on this.”
“The distinction of being #1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter is a great honour, I hope to continue to please the fans and media with my performances.”
The Fabulous Forum bill is topped by Gennady Golovkin’s world middleweight title defence against Dominic Wade.
