New WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders and promoter Frank Warren have revealed there has been no detailed dialogue with Gennady Golovkin’s team over a potential mega Middleweight unification bout.
Both parties have acknowledged an offer has been made, however promoter Frank Warren has confirmed the team will sit down to plot their next move in the first week or two of January.
“There’s been a few offers, we’re not going to discuss until the team are all back from holiday. One is from Golovkin, there’s a lot to discuss.”
Team Golovkin have suggested the silence from Saunders’ camp was telling.
“I’ve had no talks since the offer. We’ve just sent a holder back, we’ll wait until after New Year and decide what direction we go in and we’ll move from there. It’s something to be considered.”
Speaking with Kugan Cassius, Frank Warren continued “It’s a tough fight however if the terms are right I’m sure we’ll look at it.”
“There’s no getting away he’s the best at the weight, but we’re in a business. If the right offer is made to the team, I’d have no problem at all getting ready to fight Golovkin on my terms,” revealed the new World Champion.
Saunders played down speculation he has already passed on the proposed bout “I’d be up against it, but on my night I could cause any Middleweight problems.”
One other fight that has been mentioned in recent weeks is a potential rematch with Chris Eubank Jr.
“We’ve had no dialogue what so ever regarding Chris Eubank Jr. I had a missed call from his lawyer, I’ll ring him back soon. If it happens, there’s only one winner and he’ll do it easier next time,” mentioned Frank.
Billy Joe Saunders is open to a rematch, but on his terms “He’s mandatory challenger for the WBA World Middleweight Title, if he thinks he can beat Golovkin then Daniel Jacobs should be a walk in the park. Let him go and win that, then we can have a unification fight.”
