WBO World Champion Billy Joe Saunders didn’t hold back after news broke that Mexican star Canelo Alvarez had tested positive for banned drug clenbuterol ahead of his May 5th rematch with Gennady ‘Triple G’ Golovkin.
Saunders, who himself is getting ready for his big match-up against Martin Murray, live on BoxNation next month, took a pop at Canelo in typically brutal fashion describing him as a ‘cheating red headed w*nker’ and made Golovkin aware that he still wants to fight him.
The World Championship rematch from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is still set to go ahead but that didn’t stop Saunders, who has been calling out both Canelo and Golovkin for a while, from sending out a flurry of tweets aimed at his Guadalajara rival.
28-year-old Saunders even retweeted Liverpool’s Liam Smith who had a tongue-in-cheek dig at Canelo saying that his World Title loss against him in 2016 should be overturned.
I want my loss overturned, I should still be champion 🎣— Liam Smith (@LiamBeefySmith) March 5, 2018
Slick southpaw Saunders didn’t leave it there, he added more fuel to the fire on his Instagram, labelling Canelo a ‘drug cheat’ and posting up two side-by-side pictures comparing how his body has changed. He even managed to taunt Kazakhstan’s Golovkin calling him ‘boreRat’ and saying they should fight.
Golden Boy Promotions had earlier put out a statement referencing contaminated Mexican meat as the reason for Canelo’s high levels of clenbuterol, something which has affected other fighters from that region in the past.
With Canelo v GGG 2 still very much on, Saunders will need to keep his name in the mix for a showdown with the winner by overcoming the determined and relentless Murray on April 14th from The O2 in London.
Should he get past that stiff test then a major Middleweight World Title unification clash with either Canelo or Golovkin will be very much on the cards.
