WBO Middleweight Champ Billy Joe Saunders has said he's focused on beating Max Bursak to line up a huge summer showdown with Gennady Golovkin.
The Hatfield ace, who underlined his supserstar credentials with a marvellous majority decision win to dethrone Andy Lee last December, spoke at the press conference today to announce his first title defence against tough Ukrainian Max Bursak.
"I can't look past Bursak. I'm treating him like a Champion. It's not a warm up, it's a World Title fight," said Saunders.
"I spoke to Frank last week and I said I want Golovkin in the Summer," Saunders added.
"It's more of a thinking game for me, he's boxed some good fellas. I'm looking to make a statement.
"I'm excited, I've got a date and opponent. Anything can happen, I can't cut corners - I've got to make sure I do the job."
Saunders (23-0, 12 KO) has a tough test in the form of Bursak, who has wins against Nick Blackwell and Giovani de Carolis on his record, before he can look ahead to potentially massive unification fights in the summer.
Saunders' promoter Frank Warren expanded on other potential opponents for Saunders, telling the assembled media that Chris Eubank Junior had declined the opportunity for a World Title rematch against Saunders.
"They don't fancy the fight! He's fighting for the British and not the World Title that tells you all you need to know," said Warren on Eubank Junior.
