One of the great Middleweight boxers of recent times, Sergio Martinez, is a big fan of Britain's Billy Joe Saunders.
Last December, Saunders announced himself across the pond after his Montreal masterclass against David Lemieux was broadcast live on HBO in America.
Between April 2010 and June 2014, 'Maravilla' was the Lineal Middleweight Champion. Speaking to WorldBoxingNews about his old division, Martinez had a special mention for the current WBO king.
"I think Saunders really did a great job, he was very smart and won the fight easily against a strong and dangerous guy in Lemieux," said the 43-year-old.
"I would also like to congratulate him for this success as he has now shown to everybody that he is in the top fighters of the division."
While the Argentinian was full of praise for the Hatfield hero, he remained coy about how he would fare against Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez: "I don’t know if Saunders can win GGG or Canelo, but of course he can make a very good fight."
Saunders defends his belt for the fourth time against Martin Murray on April 14th in London. In 2013, Murray boxed Martinez in Buenos Aires and put up an excellent fight as he dropped the Champion in the eighth round before a controversial unanimous decision loss.
"It’s difficult for me to make a prediction because Martin is a great guy and I respect him a lot, but I think that now is Saunders’ time so he will win on points," revealed Martinez.
