WBO World Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Smith insists he won’t be intimidated by Canelo Alvarez when the pair collide on Saturday 17th September.
The flame haired Mexican, who jumps back down to 154 lbs, proved too strong for fellow Brit Amir Khan back in May.
“I kind of knew Amir was going to start well, I sparred him in the run up to that fight. When I got in with him, I knew size would play a factor but it won’t in my fight.”
‘Beefy’ craved a huge fight and that’s just what has been served up.
“I think people thought I was just saying this about the big names but he’s one of the biggest names in boxing. As soon as it was announced I was buzzing,” explained Smith who was speaking to Steve Hothersall at RadioCityTalk.
The defending Champion demolished Predrag Radosevic at the Echo Arena in Liverpool last time out with this potential fight looming in the background.
“I knew it was on the pipeline, I couldn’t say things until it was over the line. It’s the fight that gives me the butterflies in my stomach.”
With the fight taking place in America, Smith is aware he’ll be going into the lion’s den on Mexican Independence day weekend: “I’m going in there as the away fighter, I won’t be thinking if it goes to points they won’t give me it. I’ll stick to what we do best and hopefully it works.”
Whilst fans may feel aggrieved that Canelo’s proposed fight against the Kazakh KO King Gennady Golovkin has been pushed back until 2017, the likeable Liverpudlian insists it’s nothing to do with him.
“He’s got a lot of criticism on his back at the minute, perhaps I’ve had the backlash of it but it’s not anything to do with me why he’s not fighting Gennady Golovkin. This is my chance to make a name for myself in America.”
