WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders remains a target for Canelo Alvarez.
The flame haired Mexican revealed exclusively to BoxNation back in July: “Saunders is our plan. Hopefully it will happen but first things first Liam Smith is our next opponent.”
In addition, Trainer Eddy Reynoso revealed to ESPN Deportes: “Everything is possible, in Mexico there are arenas and stadiums that are very nice. It all depends on the outcome of the fight with Smith. I think once past that, it will be something to talk to Oscar de la Hoya and see if we can fix it.”
The impressive 84,000 capacity Estadio Azteca in Mexico City is rumoured to be keen to host Canelo’s first fight in his home country since 2011.
A potential fight with Saunders could be Canelo’s logic to try and bring some silverware to the table ahead of an ‘agreed’ overdue fight with Gennady Golovkin next year.
Despite the prospect of future fights Reynoso is not overlooking Liam Smith, who Canelo fights on September 17th in Dallas.
“Smith is a strong fighter, a young brawler, who is resilient and powerful, coming off eight straight wins by knockout. He is a World Champ and deserves respect. We will be prepared to take it very serious and will be disciplined going in.”
