Legendary promoter Bob Arum is predicting huge things for the winner of the WBO World Heavyweight Title fight between Joseph Parker and Andy Ruiz Jr.
On December 10th, the undefeated duo square off in Auckland, live on BoxNation. Arum is confident the victor will go on to have plenty of success in the division.
“There are so many good young fighters and competitive matches that can be made. It's an open division now and the winner of this fight has a real big future,” he told Stuff New Zealand.
“Joe is a big guy - a heavy-handed puncher and in Andy he is fighting a guy who probably has the quickest hands in the Heavyweight division. It's going to be very competitive.”
The contest at the Vector Arena will be the first ever Heavyweight Title fight to be held in New Zealand, and Parker is already a popular figure in the country.
“If Parker wins, he's such a charming kid with a big punch, he could be a major, major star. If Andy wins, he's the first Mexican to be a World Heavyweight Champion [Ruiz is Mexican-American], so there's a lot riding on this fight,” said the 84-year-old.
Arum recently promoted his 2000th show, last weekend’s clash between Vasyl Lomachenko and Nicholas Walters, and the American believes boxing’s popularity is on the rise again.
“We are on the cusp of boxing really exploding on a global basis. For so many years it was limited to one country, the United States. Now the boys in the UK have done a great job – it's bigger than it's ever been there,” he
