Light-Heavyweight Joe Smith Jr. is set to face Sullivan Barrera this Saturday for the WBC International Light-Heavyweight Title. Barrera is an amateur Cuban standout heralding from perhaps the most prestigious amateur schooling in world boxing.
Smith Jr, on the other hand, is a construction worker from Brooklyn, New York, known as ‘The Common Man’. His grit, determination and punching power have landed him two of the biggest boxing upsets in recent memory, stopping Poland’s Andrzej Fonfara in the first round and upsetting pugilistic royalty in Bernard Hopkins last December.
Barrera won’t be taking him as lightly; the division has grown significantly deeper in recent years. Smith acknowledges the deep pool of talent: “The division is truly heating up and I’m honoured to be a part of it. The winner of my upcoming fight moves right into the top of the mix.
“With my last two knockouts I have the full confidence that the sky’s the limit for me in this division, I want to achieve my dream of becoming a World Champion.”
Joe DeGuardia, head of Smith’s promotional team, believes this fight presents a perfect opportunity for their man and should he be victorious, there is a chance he could leave the building site for good, “With the Sullivan Barrera fight the stakes are even higher but we feel this is another great opportunity for Joe, back on HBO which has built many stars over the last forty years."
Watch Joe Smith Jr. square off against Sullivan Barrera, July 15th, live on BoxNation. Miguel Berchelt v Takashi Miura tops the packed card which also features Jezreel Corrales versus Robinson Castellanos.
