Confident New Yorker Willie Monroe Jr believes he can upset the odds on September 16th by dethroning Billy Joe Saunders, and plans to inspire fellow ‘underdogs’ in the process.

The pair square off at the Copper Box Arena for Saunders’ WBO World Middleweight Title. Verbals were exchanged at last week’s press conference to announce the fight, as Saunders slated Monroe Jr for being “mentally weak”.

Monroe Jr appeared relaxed despite the taunts, and told Saunders he could recognise his “gamesmanship”. In a motivational post on Instagram a few days later, ‘The Mongoose’ revealed he is revelling in the underdog role.

“This training camp is being dedicated to all those who always have to fight for what's rightfully theirs. For the underdog. For those who never give up even when giving up was the easiest thing to do,” he wrote.

“For those who stay strong, move forward and knock out all of the obstacles thrown at them,” he continued. “It's a new season mi genté! Tell all the doubters and naysayers.”

Bookmakers have Saunders as favourite for the fight, but the Champion recognises that he must be at his best to avoid an upset: “I can't afford to overlook him and I'll be in the best shape of my life on September 16th”.

Tickets are available now to watch Billy Joe Saunders v Willie Monroe Jr, plus Anthony Yarde and Daniel Dubois.
