Oleksandr Usyk will make the first defence of his newly won WBO World Cruiserweight Title against Thabiso Mchunu on the Hopkins v Smith Jr undercard, live on BoxNation.
Fresh from outpointing Krzysztof Glowacki back in September to claim his maiden World Title, Usyk now makes his American debut at the fabulous Forum in Los Angeles.
The decorated Ukrainian amateur sparkled at the London Olympics to strike Gold at Heavyweight before turning pro shortly after the games and begin his assault on the Cruiserweight division.
Racking up nine explosive KO victories on the spin, Usyk forced himself into a mandatory position to challenge for Glowacki’s title, where he impressively dethroned the Pole wide on the scorecards.
Already regarded as one of the biggest hitters in the Cruiserweight division, Usyk is now ready to make a name for himself Stateside and continue his impressive rise as one of boxing’s next big stars.
“This is a great opportunity, I’m very excited to fight for the first time in the United States. After winning the World Title, fighting in America was the next goal and I promise the fans a great performance.”
South African Mchunu is currently ranked #13 with the WBO and gets his first shot at World honours.
‘The Rock’ was halted in his previous World Title charge by a late KO from Ilunga Makabu back in May 2015, but insists he’s ready to step up: “Against good opposition, I always rise to the occasion. I’m eagerly focused on the throne!”
